Betty can't access my location. What should I do?

4 min. readlast update: 07.01.2026

If Betty can't read your location data, you'll see an error asking you to check your settings. This is usually a permissions issue, a connection type, or something interfering in the background.

You may be seeing:

"We were unable to retrieve your location. Please ensure location permissions are enabled in your browser and device settings, then try again."

"Please ensure you have accepted location permissions when prompted by the browser."

"We were unable to verify your location. Please ensure location services are enabled on your device and try again."

"Location verification timed out. Please try again. If the issue persists, restart the app and retry."

"Please check your browser location settings and firewall. Turn off VPN connection and try again in 5 minutes."

"We were unable to verify your location. Make sure you're not connected to CarPlay, reset your device location settings and try again."

"Your device does not meet our security requirements. Please use an unmodified device to continue."

πŸ“ Check Location Permissions

Make sure Betty or your browser is allowed to access your location, with Precise Location (iOS) or High Accuracy (Android) turned on.

πŸ’‘ If it's already set to Allow, try revoking and re-granting – this can clear a stuck state.

  • 🍎 iPhone / iPad (iOS)
    • Open Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Location Services β†’ make sure it's ON
    • Scroll down to your browser (Safari, Chrome) or the Betty app β†’ tap it
    • Select While Using the App (or Always)
    • Toggle Precise Location ON
  • πŸ€– Android
    • Go to Settings β†’ Location β†’ turn it ON β†’ set mode to High Accuracy
    • Tap App permissions β†’ find your browser or the Betty app
    • Select Allow only while using the app (or Always)
    • Toggle Use precise location ON
    • Also go to Settings β†’ Location β†’ Location Services β†’ Google Location Accuracy β†’ turn it ON
  • πŸ’» Chrome (Desktop)
    • Go to Betty.ca β†’ click the lock icon next to the URL β†’ Site Settings β†’ Location β†’ Allow

Or

    • Settings β†’ Privacy and security β†’ Site Settings β†’ Location β†’ allow Betty.ca
  • 🍎 Safari (Mac)
    •  In the menu bar: Safari β†’ Settings for This Website β†’ set Location to Allow
  • 🦊 Firefox (Desktop)
    • Go to Betty.ca β†’ click the padlock icon β†’ Permissions β†’ Location β†’ Allow
    • If still blocked: Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Permissions β†’ Location β†’ Settings β†’ set Betty.ca to Allow
  • πŸ”΅ Edge (Desktop)
    • Go to Betty.ca β†’ click the lock icon β†’ Location β†’ Allow
  • πŸͺŸ Windows
    • Start β†’ Settings β†’ Privacy & security β†’ Location β†’ turn Location services ON
  • 🍎 macOS
    •  Apple menu β†’ System Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Location Services β†’ turn ON β†’ allow your browser

πŸ“± Check Device-level Location Services (Android)

App permissions alone aren't enough if your phone's global Location Services are switched off.

  • Go to Settings β†’ Location β†’ make sure the toggle is ON
  • Set the mode to High Accuracy if available

πŸš— Disconnect CarPlay or Android Auto

If your phone is connected to a car system, disconnect it before trying again – CarPlay and Android Auto can interfere with how location data is shared.

πŸ–₯️ Check your Connection Type (Desktop)

If you're on a wired/LAN connection, switch to Wi-Fi. Wired connections can report a location range that crosses provincial borders, causing the check to fail even when you're clearly inside Ontario.

πŸ’‘ On desktop, Wi-Fi is essential for accurate location – without it, your location is estimated from your IP address only, which is not reliable enough.

πŸ“Ά Try Switching Networks

Switch from Wi-Fi to Mobile Data, or vice versa – mobile data typically gives more accurate results.

πŸ” Restart the App or Browser

  • 🍎 iOS
    • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the App Switcher (On older devices with a Home button, double-press the Home button)
    • Find the Betty app and swipe it up and off the screen
    • Reopen and log back in – select Allow when asked to share your location
  • πŸ€– Android
    • Option A – From Recent Apps:
      • Tap the Recent Apps button β†’ find Betty β†’ swipe it away β†’ reopen
    • Option B – From Settings:
      • Settings β†’ Apps β†’ Betty β†’ Force Stop β†’ reopen and log back in
